Visit Fort Miles at Cape Henlopen State Park
$5 - $10
What we love about Ft. Miles is not just it's historical significant during World War II, but it gives us STEM learning opportunities related to PHYSICS! We love that!! The large guns and canons that are situated high on the huge sand dune are there because of how physics tells us the a giant mortar will travel of a distance based on it's weight. The positioning of the guns had to be just right and use just the right size morters to be able to target enemy ships. This, my friends, is real world application of physics!
Additionally, the park is home to a number observation towers. There happens to be one next to the main Fort that you can go inside of, climb the spiral staircase (which is safe, but dizzying), and once you're at the top, the 360 degree view is unsurpassed by any other view in the area. Be sure to stop at the information markers at the base of the tower for a few great lessons in ENGINEERING. You'll be surprised at what goes into tower building.

Ideas, Notes, & Tips
Definitely check with the park to see what types of events are going on at the Fort. Sometimes the guides are there to talk you through everything. If they're not, there are plenty of plaques around explaining things.
There's a museum at the top of the hill in one of the bunkers. Check with the park for hours of operation.
